What qualifies as "famous" on youtube?

What qualifies as "famous" on youtube?

How many subscribers does someone need to have to be considered "famous"? For example, compared to modern-day celebrities in other areas.

It's not about a technical number of subscribers, but rather the familiarity with which the person is known.
By 'famous on YouTube' I'll assume you mean someone who is famous amount YouTube users for their own channel.
Take PewDiePie, for example, who is a famous YouTuber (whether or not you find him entertaining). He has a large number of subscribers but, more than that, his fame comes from being known. Most people on YouTube can tell you that he is the highest earning Youtuber in the world.
However, fame is relative. If my grandparents used YouTube I doubt they would be interested in PewDiePie. I doubt they would even know his name to hear. However, they may have shared their favourite travelling vlog channel with the rest of the 80+ population of Ireland. In that regard, this theoretical vlog would be extremely famous among that population.
So fame isn't about numbers, but about being familiar and recognisable to a large proportion of viewers within a sizeable population.

My best answer is if people on the street recognize you and stop you to just talk, take a picture, or sign your autograph. If you can just go to the store and buy a loaf of bread without being hassled or tackled, you ain't famous.

When you get a Gold Play Button, a Diamond Play Button, or into YouTube Rewind.
