I would suggest you to follow the tricks that have been explained in the following post. They mentioned an app named Unseenly to install, hope it works for you as well.
If you preview it by bot opened the app on your device but just look at it on the lock screen of an iPad, then it won't get marked as seen
If you preview it by not opening the message, in that case it will not show as "seen" since you haven't opened the message.

You can download this app on Google Chrome which allows you to read messages without showing the "Seen"

No. If you see a message notification and you click on it you see a preview of the message. As long as you don't click on that (the unread message will be marked in a different color in the preview), the sender does not see "seen". They only see it as "seen" when the message is marked "read" (marked same color with other old messages in the preview).

As far as what I have experienced in these past days, I have no clue quite frankly and that no one else does either. Facebook is a screw up and cannot do anything correctly. So I would not follow the whole SEEn BS in a chat scenario. You will never know unless you get a personal message back from the person.
I had a friend who I sent a message to last night at around 11pm. I then opened the message and it said seen at the same time that I sent the message to her. I asked her, did you see my thank you message at the set time that it said SEEN/when I sent it. She told me no. She had her tablet on, but the screen was on sleep mode like it normally does when idle. She came back at 1am saying she just got my messages to her at 1am and she didn’t see the messages at 11pm because she was busy.

It is depend on the condition whether you read the message or not if you not read then the sender can’t see and if you already opened this message then the sender see it that you have read the message.

How do I count Facebook messages?

If you mean counting the messages in a conversation, then you could do so by clicking on "See full conversation" and scroll up, the number of messages in the conversation will be visible.

On the other hand, if you wish to know the total number of conversations (chats) or people from whom you have received messages, just click on the messages icon and you will be able to see the number of chats in your "inbox" as well as those in your "others" folder.

Hope that was helpful.

If you are using Chrome, try an extension named

Messenger Counter

offered by Alexander Nørup

Just install it and count your messages. I'd strongly suggest you delete this extension once used in order to avoid your data being stolen.
This is easy to use. I don't know about other browsers.

There used to be a facebook app to count messages. But that doesn't work now.

There is one other method by scrolling up your chat (The middle column), but this method is not workable.

If you are a techie and want to be little creative just try hands on some script which will ease this out for you, this is the era of scripting and automation, just give it a try :)
(Works on Mac, there probably is a way for Windows) If you want an exact number and the distribution of times/dates, you can archive your fb message data.  The messages are enclosed in
tags, so you can use a macro to remove them (I use Emacs). Then you have a htm file that you can open in Textedit and convert to .txt, but with the formatting of the html.  After that you can just delete the conversations that do not interest you you and count the lines.

This probably isn't worth your time to figure out, but being able to look at the data is interesting.

Probably you want to know about number of messages not chats.
You can do by yourself too.
Tap on message icon there will no of conversation and in each conversations when you open there will be no of remaining messages in that conversation.
Then do some little math work and calcualte all information.
And also use this application Messenger Counter.
Hope it works for you!
Good Luck :)

First go to primary school learn counting than count your all the messages the last number which your message get is the total number of messages you have....

You can count your facebook messages. You has to do it manually. Counting one by one. If you ask the question how many messages do i have.Facebook replies Are you interested ib friends or numbers. Got it.

For that go on to message list and there is one other method by scrolling up your chat (The middle column), but this method is not workable.

Why does Facebook Messenger say I'm active when I'm not using Messenger?

Hey,
Usually it takes about 7 mins for Facebook to updated your activity as being inactive. Occassionally your phone and FB app exchange information regarding messages and whatnot. This makes it look like your online.
Please note: your phone will take over the connection, if you sign out of Facebook on your computer. So whilst it may take 7 mins for your Facebook activity to be updated as offline, when your phone takes over the connection it may take an additional 7 mins for inactive to go off.

Simple answer: If you re active on facebook you can use the version of messenger which is incorporated in the website, so are (potentially) active on messenger as well.

The app could just be running in the background of your phone or the information might not have updated by the time you have checked it. If its hours later then I would think it is because the facebook messenger is running on the background.
