Why is my Facebook friend showing up as active on Messenger but isn't receiving my messages

What you mean by the term "not receiving your messages"? Facebook Messenger shows you that you're active when connected to internet.

Not Receiving your messages should reflect that your messages are just sent but not delivered. If your messages are marked as delivered then your friend is receiving your messages but not be focusing at your messages.

If your messages are marked as sent it means your friend is inactive and not connected to internet.

If your messages are marked as sent and you're sure that your friend is active on messenger and connected to internet then your messages might be marked as spam by your friend, which means your messages are moving into their other folder.

Facebook Now Lets You Block Messages Without Blocking Friends.
Do you have that one annoying friend who just won’t let up with the whines? Or maybe you don’t really want to hear from that aunt who’s always asking you why you’re still single. Either way, you can now block them, and the function is tactful, too.
1. Go to a message box with that particular Facebook friend.
2. Open the Settings drop-down menu, and find the Block Messages option.
3. Click that.
4. When your friend tries to send you a message, they will get a pop-up saying, “This person isn’t receiving messages from you right now.”
5. As for you, when you try to send them a message, you’ll get a pop-up too, but it reads, “Unblock Messages? You and [friend’s name] will be able to send messages and call each other.”
Facebook is making it easier to manage harassment or conflicts on the social network. Now that you know that these are the possibilities for the platform, make the most out of it. We do advice that you think through the decision of blocking those annoying friends and to not be trigger-happy with the message-blocking. Though if you feel like blocking everybody, you can always unblock them later.

When you send a text message or a message over any messaging app that tracks the status of the message the states are sentdelivered, and (optionally) read. This is what they mean:
  • Sent: The message has been successfully sent from your phone to the server and is out of your hands. It will fail at this if your phone has no service.
  • Delivered: The message was delivered to the device or devices that you intended it to go to. If will fail if the phone on the receiving end has no service.
  • Read: The message was opened. Most services have the option to turn this off in which case you will only see that the message was delivered.
In your case, the message is sitting there on the server, waiting for the device it was sent to to come online.
Messenger uses different icons to let you know when your messages have been sent, delivered and read:
  • : A blue circle means your message is sending
  • : A blue circle with a check means your message has been sent
  • : A filled-in blue circle with a check means your message has been delivered
  • : A small version of your friend or contact's photo will pop up below the message when they've read it
  • It is just so…)) Nobody knows Facebook algorithms clearly. As I knew, some build-in messengers are displaying user online 30 min more after a user had logged out. But it also depends on different conditions - type of Internet connection, OS, device etc
  • He is using Facebook,  and ignoring your messages or it can be background data for messenger is disabled.
  • Well sometimes when you are online.. Logged in to web and forget to logout, this is the kind of situation where you can see me online .. But I am not really sitting infront of my screen .. Cause if I want to ignore you I would offline my messenger to avoid any contact.
